California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing bipartisan criticism over the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, potentially jeopardizing any presidential aspirations. The LA Games are reportedly facing financial turmoil, with sponsors withdrawing, high-profile resignations, and escalating costs.
Former President Trump’s tariffs, which Newsom has threatened to challenge in court, have likely contributed to rising costs and project delays, including crucial transportation improvements intended to alleviate Los Angeles’ notorious traffic congestion. Newsom is under intense pressure from both Democrats and Republicans to navigate these challenges and ensure the Games proceed smoothly. The “Recovery Games” branding, intended to symbolize Los Angeles’ resurgence after devastating wildfires, has also drawn criticism.
Adding to the pressure, the activist group NOlympics LA, formed in 2017, continues to actively oppose the Games, disrupting press conferences and protesting Newsom. Group spokesperson Eric Sheehan stated, “It’s an unacceptable gamble of public money.
Everything we were told about these Olympics has turned out not to be true. We’re expecting a lot of negative consequences for Angelenos.”
Major sponsors like Salesforce, Toyota, and Panasonic have reportedly pulled out, leaving Delta Airlines and Comcast as the remaining high-profile sponsors. The financial strain of the recent wildfires, estimated to have caused between $28 and $53 billion in damages across Southern California, further complicates the situation.
Despite the mounting challenges, Newsom expressed optimism last year, stating, “The Olympics and Paralympics are coming to Los Angeles in 2028, and California couldn’t be more excited. These Games are an opportunity to show the best of our state, and our nation.
We look forward to highlighting not only the majesty of California, but also our strength, integrity, sportsmanship, and perseverance.” However, with mounting financial pressures and growing opposition, the road to 2028 promises to be a difficult one for Newsom and the LA Games.
