A Floridian’s Guide to the Sunshine State: Must-See Spots and Tourist Traps
Florida, the land of sunshine, theme parks, and stunning beaches, draws tourists from all corners of the globe. But with so much to see and do, how do you separate the must-see attractions from the tourist traps? As a 25-year resident of the Sunshine State, I’ve explored it all, and I’m here to share my insider tips.
Worth the Hype:
- St. Petersburg: This Gulf Coast gem boasts a vibrant arts scene, a laid-back atmosphere, and a plethora of murals, markets, and dining options.
Don’t miss the St. Pete Pier for breathtaking waterfront views, especially at sunset.
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Universal Orlando): Whether you’re a Potterhead or not, the immersive experience of these parks is truly magical. From Butterbeer to the Hogwarts Express, every detail brings the wizarding world to life. Park-to-park tickets are a must to experience both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade.
- Dry Tortugas National Park: This remote national park, located 70 miles west of Key West, is a hidden gem. Explore the historic Fort Jefferson and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Book your ferry or seaplane in advance, as space fills up quickly.
- Wynwood Walls (Miami): This outdoor street-art museum is an explosion of color and creativity. Explore the ever-changing murals and discover the trendy shops, galleries, and restaurants in the surrounding Wynwood neighborhood.
- Everglades National Park: Experience Florida’s wild side in this diverse ecosystem. Take an airboat tour to spot alligators and other wildlife or enjoy a peaceful kayak trip through the unique landscape.
- The Panhandle Beaches: From Pensacola to Destin, the panhandle boasts some of the softest, whitest sand in Florida. Destin’s emerald waters are a family favorite, especially during the less crowded spring and fall seasons.
Skip It:
- International Drive (Orlando): While it offers some attractions, much of I-Drive feels like a tourist trap. Opt for Disney Springs instead for a taste of Disney magic without needing a park ticket.
- South Beach (Miami): Unless partying is your priority, South Beach can be a pricey and crowded disappointment. Explore other Miami beaches and neighborhoods for a more enjoyable experience. Crandon Park Beach offers a more peaceful alternative.
