Vatican City — Pope Francis, known affectionately as “the People’s Pope,” passed away at age 88 on Monday following a heart attack. The Vatican revealed details of the pontiff’s final hours on Tuesday, painting a poignant picture of a man dedicated to his flock until the very end.
Just hours before his passing, on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis made a final appearance in St. Peter’s Square, greeting an estimated 50,000 faithful.
He initially hesitated, questioning his personal caregiver, Massimiliano Strappetti, whether he was up to the task, asking, “Do you think I can manage it?” Reassured, he proceeded with the visit, embracing well-wishers, especially children.
His final words to Strappetti were reportedly, “Thank you for bringing me back to the Square.” He then enjoyed a quiet dinner and rested.
Early Monday morning, around 5:30 a.m., the Pope showed the first signs of illness. An hour later, he fell into a coma, offering a farewell gesture to Strappetti.
According to those present, his death was swift and without suffering. The Vatican confirmed that the Pope’s passing followed recent health challenges, including a recent hospitalization for double pneumonia.
The Pope’s body will lie in state at the Vatican beginning Wednesday, allowing mourners to pay their respects. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in St.
Peter’s Square. Images released by the Vatican show the Pope lying in repose in a wooden casket, wearing red vestments and his bishop’s miter.
