Tragedy at Purgatory Chasm Claims Mother’s Life

Sutton, MA – A Wednesday afternoon hike at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation ended in tragedy when a 49-year-old mother fell to her death. Carolyn Sanger of Topsfield was hiking with three of her children and other family members when she fell approximately 50-75 feet from a cliff just before 2 p.m.

Despite the immediate response of several medical professionals who happened to be hiking in the area, Ms. Sanger succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

While the chasm is closed during winter months due to hazardous conditions, the weather on Wednesday was warm and dry. Authorities are investigating the incident, but the fall appears to be accidental.

Several agencies, including the Sutton Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police, Northbridge Police Department, and LifeStar, participated in the rescue efforts.

Purgatory Chasm, a popular hiking destination located south of Worcester, is known for its rugged terrain and scenic overlooks. One hiker, Andy Spears, commented on the inherent dangers of the area, noting the precarious overhangs along the chasm’s edge. He expressed sadness over the tragic accident.

The Sutton Police Department offered condolences to the Sanger family in their statement.
