A car bomb detonated in Balashikha, just outside Moscow, on Friday, killing Lt. Gen.

Yaroslav Moskalik, according to the Russian Investigative Committee. Moskalik served as the deputy head of the main operations directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov immediately blamed Ukraine for the attack, characterizing the incident as another example of the “Kiev regime’s” terrorist activities. Peskov emphasized the need for vigilance despite ongoing peace negotiations. Ukraine has not yet issued an official response.

Investigators are currently on the scene. Video footage, purportedly from a CCTV camera overlooking the parking lot of an apartment complex, appears to show the moment the parked vehicle exploded as a pedestrian approached.

This incident comes amidst renewed efforts by the Trump administration to expedite a resolution to the three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine. President Trump has stated he has a deadline in mind for the ongoing peace talks, although he has not disclosed it.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday for the fourth round of discussions. This meeting followed President Trump’s public criticism of recent Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, which marked the deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital since the summer of 2024.
