Evans, Ga. — Tragedy struck the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Saturday afternoon when a traffic stop turned deadly, leaving one deputy dead and another critically wounded.
The incident unfolded near Mile Marker 194 off Belair Road. While the names of the deputies have yet to be released, authorities have identified the suspect as James Blake Montgomery.
A large-scale manhunt, involving helicopters and drones, ensued. Though Montgomery was considered armed and dangerous, Major Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office assured the public late Saturday that he was “no longer a threat.”
As of Saturday night, no arrests have been made. The Georgia State Patrol assisted by blocking roads and securing the scene. Law enforcement activity appeared to be concentrated around the Arrowood Mobile Home Community off Wrightsboro Road.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the unwavering support owed to law enforcement officers. Governor Brian Kemp also shared his prayers and gratitude for the fallen deputy and his injured colleague.
