Las Vegas Pawn Stars Nabs Mighty Thor Comic

A vintage Marvel comic book featuring the first appearance of the Mighty Thor has landed in the hands of Rick Harrison, star of the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars.” The rare 1962 issue of “Journey Into Mystery” sparked a flurry of excitement and ultimately a hefty $40,000 price tag.

The comic’s owner, hoping to fund her travels, brought the prized possession into the shop, highlighting its significance in the Marvel universe and its impressive 8.5 grading. Harrison, recognizing the legendary status of Stan Lee, co-creator of Thor, immediately knew the book held potential value.

To assess the comic’s worth, Harrison called in expert Steve from Torpedo Comics. Steve confirmed the book’s pedigree, emphasizing the fame of creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and noting that Thor was the fifth character introduced in the Marvel universe, hot on the heels of Spider-Man in 1962. The pristine “White Pages” condition further boosted its value, leading Steve to estimate a retail price of $60,000.

Negotiations began with Harrison offering $30,000 cash, highlighting the immediate payout versus consignment or auction. The owner countered with $50,000.

After some back and forth, the deal closed at $40,000 – one of the most expensive comic book purchases ever made on the show. The seller, pleased with the outcome, planned to help her brother with bills and use the remaining funds for her travels.
