Poland: A Delightful Surprise
Forget the usual European summer vacation spots. This year, I ventured to Poland, a country I’d longed to explore for its history and my own Polish heritage. What I found was a delightful shock to the system, defying all my expectations in the best possible way.
My preconceived notions of a stark, grey, Cold War-era landscape were quickly dispelled. Cities like Kraków and Warsaw were a vibrant mix of old and new, seamlessly blending charming old towns and ornate pre-war buildings with modern glass skyscrapers and impressive Soviet-era structures. Even the nondescript Cold War buildings added to the unique architectural tapestry.
Beyond the cities, Poland’s diverse landscape captivated me. From the stunning beaches to the breathtaking Tatra Mountains, the country’s natural beauty was a revelation.
A cable car ride in Zakopane offered incredible views of aqua-blue lakes and lush valleys that rivaled the Swiss Alps. This hiker’s haven left a lasting impression.
Getting around Poland’s major cities was a breeze, thanks to impressive public transportation systems. Warsaw boasts a network of buses, trams, and subways, easily navigable with a user-friendly app. Kraków was incredibly walkable, but its robust bus and tram system, along with convenient train connections to nearby attractions like the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau, made exploring the region effortless.
Far from the “cold” stereotype, Poland surprised me with its warm, welcoming atmosphere and numerous communal spaces. Lively parks and town squares buzzed with activity, from families enjoying picnics to groups practicing yoga.
A vibrant open-air food market provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of live music and socializing. Even smaller towns like Zakopane offered pedestrian-friendly main streets and inviting promenades.
Finally, Polish cuisine was a delicious discovery. Beyond the classic pierogi, I found a diverse and modern culinary scene.
From high-end Polish fusion restaurants to classic steak and pasta, and even a stunning Middle Eastern-inspired eatery, Poland offered a feast for the senses. The affordability allowed me to indulge in Michelin-starred dining experiences that would have been out of reach back home.
With the exception of one forgettable fast-food stop (at my kids’ insistence!), every meal was a culinary triumph.
Poland, you were a delightful surprise. I can’t wait to return!
