- Shopper warns about milk sold at Costco and Walmart after new FDA policy: ‘No longer safe…’ (marketrealist.com)
Hold your horses, milk drinkers! A TikTok video has sparked concern about the safety of milk sold at major retailers like Costco and Walmart.
The video, created by Chey Ford, claims that due to the FDA temporarily suspending its milk quality testing program, most milk brands are now unsafe. Ford recommends sticking to Fairlife and Horizon Organics.
So, is your milk safe? Here’s the lowdown: The FDA did suspend its testing program due to staffing cuts, but this isn’t a complete shutdown.
The program is being moved to a different lab, and in the meantime, state and federal labs are still analyzing food samples. The FDA also confirmed that existing quality standards for milk and dairy remain in effect.
Ford seems to be referencing information from Dr. Zachary Rubin, a pediatric allergist, who discussed the FDA’s policy change on his own TikTok.
He recommends looking for ultra-pasteurized milk, which undergoes higher heat treatment and is more likely to eliminate microbes. While Fairlife and Horizon Organics are ultra-pasteurized, other brands, including some sold by major retailers, also offer this type of milk.
So, check those labels!
Furthermore, reports indicate that the FDA’s program primarily impacted individual producers’ own testing, not the overall safety of the milk supply. Milk brands are still responsible for ensuring their products are safe and continue to conduct their own quality control. So, no need to ditch your favorite milk brand just yet – just be an informed consumer and double-check that label!
