Royals Who Don’t Get Security Like Harry Wants

Additional Coverage:

Prince Harry’s latest attempt to reinstate his UK security detail has been denied. The Duke of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California, has expressed concerns about his family’s safety during visits to the UK. He maintains he should receive the same level of protection afforded to working royals like King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales.

However, several other members of the royal family do not receive full-time police protection. Prince Andrew lost his taxpayer-funded security detail after stepping back from public duties in 2019.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie also do not have round-the-clock security, a perk they lost in 2011 amidst a budget dispute. Even Zara Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne, does not receive automatic police protection.

Other royals, including Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, only receive security while undertaking official engagements. This policy underscores the distinction between working royals, who represent the monarchy full-time, and other family members who do not.
