Chicago Cardinal Becomes First US Pope

Vatican City – In a historic election, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States has been chosen as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.

The announcement was met with cheers and the waving of American flags in St. Peter’s Square.

The newly elected pontiff, formerly known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, is a 69-year-old member of the Augustinian religious order. He greeted the crowds gathered in St.

Peter’s Square with the words “Peace be with you,” delivered in Italian and Spanish. He added, “We have to be a church that works together to build bridges.”

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV previously served as the Archbishop of Peru, a role stemming from his missionary work in the South American nation, which also granted him Peruvian citizenship. His dual citizenship may have played a role in his election, as the Catholic Church has historically been hesitant to elevate U.S. clergy to top leadership positions due to America’s global influence. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed then-Cardinal Prevost to oversee the office responsible for vetting bishop nominations, a position of considerable power within the Church.

The conclave, which began late Wednesday, concluded on its second day after several rounds of voting. The selection of the name Leo XIV carries significant weight, often reflecting the policies and priorities of the new pontiff.

Pope Leo XIII, known as the “Pope of Labor,” served until 1903. Many speculate that Pope Leo XIV will similarly champion the cause of working people and the underprivileged, drawing on his Chicago roots.

The historic election has drawn congratulations from world leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both expressed their excitement and anticipation for the future of the Catholic Church under the leadership of the first American pope.
