Ukraine Ceasefire: Will Russia Agree?

Additional Coverage:

Ukraine and its allies have called for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, beginning Monday. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the proposal on Saturday, stating that Ukraine and its allies are prepared for a complete, unconditional ceasefire across land, air, and sea. Sybiha emphasized that a monitored ceasefire could lead to constructive peace negotiations.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed this sentiment, expressing the EU’s support for the 30-day ceasefire proposal. She stressed the importance of implementing the ceasefire without preconditions and warned of further sanctions against Russia should a ceasefire be breached.

Leaders from the UK, France, and Germany, with US backing, have joined the call, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept the 30-day ceasefire. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that a ceasefire would demonstrate Putin’s commitment to peace and urged him to extend the VE Day pause into a full 30-day ceasefire. He warned that if Russia refuses, increased sanctions and further military aid to Ukraine will follow.
