A Globetrotter’s Reflections: Finding Roots While Embracing Freedom

A life of international travel sounds idyllic, and for Halona Black, it has been. Since 2018, she’s explored 10 countries, creating a fulfilling, child-free existence.

But a recent conversation with her 70-year-old father, her last close relative, brought a new perspective. His discussion of end-of-life plans sparked a realization: while she cherished her independence, she also needed deeper roots.

Black’s journey began with a planned three-month trip to Thailand. That trip evolved into a years-long adventure, building on earlier experiences like her Peace Corps service in Togo, West Africa.

After two significant relationships ended without fulfilling her dreams of family and travel, she decided to prioritize her own path. At 40, she embraced a life of solo travel and exploration.

Her father’s words, however, resonated deeply. While she’d built connections around the world, she recognized the potential for a future where those bonds might not provide the support she might need.

This realization wasn’t about regretting her choices, but about acknowledging a new chapter. She still valued her freedom and child-free life, but she now understood the importance of creating a stronger support system.

Black is now envisioning a future in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, drawn to its vibrant artistic community. She dreams of owning a home – a place to cultivate deeper relationships, host gatherings, and become part of the local fabric. Learning Spanish is another priority, enabling genuine connection with her neighbors.

This new direction isn’t a retreat from her independent life. Instead, it’s a conscious decision to live with greater intention.

As she approaches 50, Black is redefining freedom. It’s not just about wandering, but also about belonging.

She’s embracing the opportunity to plant roots while continuing to cherish the life she’s built.
