Local Man Reflects on Wife’s Passing, Finds Strength in Final Moments
A local man shares a deeply personal story of love, loss, and resilience following the death of his first wife over two decades ago. Juan Cruz Jr. was by his wife’s side when she passed away from a rare bone cancer, osteosarcoma, in January 2001. He recounts the experience as a painful yet profound gift that shaped his perspective on life and continues to influence him today.
Cruz’s world was shattered in February 2000 when his wife, then a young mother to their 2-year-old daughter, received the devastating cancer diagnosis. What began as a seemingly minor leg pain during a run quickly escalated, leading to a CT scan and the heartbreaking news that she had less than a year to live.
Following months of treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the cancer tragically spread to her lungs. By November, she entered hospice care.
Cruz vividly remembers the early morning hours of January 14th, sitting by his wife’s bedside. He recalls the nurse’s solemn words, “It’s almost time,” before taking his wife’s hand and offering words of comfort in her final moments.
Cruz describes being present for his wife’s passing as a privilege, a parallel to being present at their daughter’s birth. He credits the experience with facilitating his grieving process and providing a foundation of strength that has helped him navigate subsequent life challenges, including a divorce, the loss of his father, and a recent layoff.
The profound experience, Cruz explains, instilled in him a deep appreciation for life’s precious moments and a renewed focus on what truly matters. He believes this perspective has been instrumental in his ability to face adversity with courage and resilience.
