Tel Aviv, Israel – After a harrowing ordeal, 21-year-old Edan Alexander has been reunited with his parents. The American-Israeli hostage, held captive by Hamas in Gaza since October 7, 2023, was released on Monday and is now being treated at a Tel Aviv hospital.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Edan’s parents, Adi and Yael Alexander, expressed their overwhelming relief and joy. “We always believed this moment would come,” Adi shared, the emotion palpable in his voice.
“Hope is mandatory, and it finally happened.” He described the reunion as “unbelievable,” cherishing the simple act of hugging his son again.
Yael spoke of savoring the everyday moments with Edan, from simply being by his side to connecting with friends and family who offered unwavering support during their ordeal. “The simple things,” she emphasized, “are a blessing.”
Edan, originally from New Jersey, moved to Israel at 18 and was serving in the Israel Defense Forces when he was captured during the Hamas attack. His parents described their relentless efforts to secure his release, knocking on every door, including those of past and present presidents. Their persistence paid off, and they expressed gratitude for the successful outcome.
Edan’s release, facilitated by negotiations between the U.S. and Hamas, is seen as a positive step towards further dialogue and a potential turning point in the ongoing conflict. He is believed to be the last living American hostage held by Hamas, though the group is thought to still hold the remains of four deceased American citizens.
The Alexanders acknowledged that Edan needs time to recover, and they intend to provide him with all the support he requires. Adi shared a heartwarming anecdote of sharing a beer with his son on the hospital roof, a moment he says he will never forget.
Looking forward, Adi expressed hope for the release of all remaining hostages. He also praised the efforts of President Trump’s team, specifically Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, for their tireless work in bringing Edan home. The family plans to return to New Jersey soon, where Edan can enjoy simple pleasures like watching his brother play basketball and, of course, sharing another beer with his father.
