Rock legends Pink Floyd recently sat down with Classic Rock magazine to reminisce about their iconic 1972 concert film Live at Pompeii, revealing some entertaining anecdotes from the experience. Bassist Roger Waters candidly admitted the band’s altered state during filming, stating, “You can see we were f**king stoned.
Dave and I were completely out of our brains.” He even confessed to rolling a joint every morning due to nicotine withdrawal.
Drummer Nick Mason reflected on the uncertain times, saying, “At the time, the future was a complete fog. We knew The Dark Side Of The Moon was good, but that didn’t mean it was going to be around fifty years later.” He also expressed a desire to have filmed concert videos for other landmark albums like Dark Side and Wish You Were Here, lamenting the current ubiquity of live concert films.
Guitarist David Gilmour expressed surprise at the film’s lasting impact: “I don’t think any of us thought it would be as well-received and last in people’s minds for as long as it did.”
Mason, now in his eighties, has been touring with his band Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets. He explained that he started the group because he “missed the playing part” but admitted his enthusiasm for touring has diminished somewhat with age: “I’m aware that it’s a privilege to earn your living this way – doing something that’s fun.
I hope maybe the Saucers do a bit more. But now I’m past eighty, my appetite for mid-priced hotels and tour buses has waned slightly.”
