Charges Filed Against Friend After Baseball Fan’s Fall

Additional Coverage:

A McKeesport man is facing charges after allegedly supplying alcohol to an underage fan who suffered a serious fall at PNC Park last month.

21-year-old Ethan Kirkwood allegedly provided two beers to 20-year-old Kavan Markwood during the Pirates-Cubs game on April 30th. Markwood fell 20 feet from the bleachers onto the field during the seventh inning.

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed Kirkwood is facing two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor. Video footage and receipts from the park allegedly show Kirkwood purchasing two 24-ounce Miller Lites and later giving one to Markwood.

After Markwood’s fall, Kirkwood reportedly jumped onto the field to assist him. Markwood’s girlfriend confirmed he’d consumed two beers inside the park, and Kirkwood allegedly admitted to the purchase.

Markwood is recovering from a broken neck, clavicle, and back, and recently took his first steps since the accident. A witness described Markwood celebrating a play and appearing to lose his balance while holding onto the railing.

The incident is being treated as accidental. Kirkwood’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 23rd.
