Walmart’s Great Value ice cream sandwiches refuse to melt, sparking online outrage and comparisons to other brands.
A TikTok user, Julie (@julie_lunar), recently conducted an experiment to test the theory that Walmart’s Great Value ice cream sandwiches don’t melt. She purchased a box explicitly labeled “made with real ice cream” and left a sandwich out overnight.
The next morning, the sandwich had retained its shape, although slightly softer, and had turned a yellowish color. Her partner, while expressing concern about the hue, still ate the sandwich.
The video quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of views and ignited a debate about food quality standards in American supermarkets. Comments ranged from accusations of “poisoning America” to questions about why certain American foods are banned in other countries.
To compare, Julie and her partner performed the same experiment with Klondike ice cream sandwiches, purchased from the same Walmart store. Interestingly, the Klondike sandwich also didn’t melt, though it didn’t change color. While this seemed to vindicate Klondike for Julie, it’s important to note that Klondike’s packaging doesn’t explicitly advertise the product as “ice cream sandwiches,” unlike the Great Value brand.
The experiment has raised concerns about the composition of these frozen treats and fueled existing anxieties about food processing and labeling practices.
