Country star Jelly Roll made a surprise visit to the Hennepin County Jail in Minneapolis on May 20, 2024, to share his inspirational story with inmates. The visit took place before his concert with Post Malone at U.S. Bank Stadium.
According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Jelly Roll spoke to detainees about his own experiences with incarceration and how he turned his life around. He discussed spending thirteen years in and out of the system, starting at the age of 13, and eventually earning his GED while incarcerated.
“I didn’t go home to become rich and famous,” he told the inmates. “I just wanted to be the dad I didn’t have.”
Sheriff Whit praised Jelly Roll as “a great example of how jail programs can change lives,” emphasizing the importance of utilizing jail time productively.
The Sheriff’s Office presented Jelly Roll with a commemorative key to the jail before his departure.
