Could Your Spare Change Be Worth a Fortune? Check Your Dimes!
Rare coins can be surprisingly valuable, sometimes selling for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. So, before you toss that spare change back in the drawer, take a closer look at your dimes! You might be holding onto a small fortune.
Here are ten dimes to watch out for:
- 1965 Roosevelt Dime (No Mint Mark): Some 1965 Philadelphia-minted Roosevelt dimes lack the usual “P” mint mark.
Those in excellent condition, especially with full bands (the horizontal lines across the torch on the back) or a visible copper layer peeking through, can be quite valuable. While most are worth only a bit more than face value, some have sold for over $1,000.
- 1965 Roosevelt Silver Dime: 1965 marked the transition from 90% silver dimes to copper-nickel.
However, a few silver dimes slipped into circulation. If you find one, it could be worth thousands; one even fetched over $8,000 at auction in 2019.
- 1871-CC Seated Liberty Dime: 19th-century dimes are scarce, but finding an 1871-CC (Carson City mint) Seated Liberty dime could bring you a windfall. With only about 100 believed to exist, one sold for over $270,000 in 2014.
- 1970-S Roosevelt Dime (No Mint Mark): While not as rare as some, 1970-S dimes missing their mint mark are still collectible and worth more than their face value – potentially hundreds of dollars.
- 1982-1983 Roosevelt Dimes (No Mint Mark): Similar to the 1970-S, dimes from these years without a mint mark can be worth significantly more than ten cents.
- 1919-D Mercury Dime: Featuring Lady Liberty in a winged cap, these dimes can be valuable, particularly in good condition. One sold for over $218,000 in 2000.
- 1996-W Roosevelt Dime: Minted at West Point to commemorate the design’s 50th anniversary, these dimes are relatively scarce. While a typical one might fetch around $50, some collectors pay considerably more.
- 2020-D Roosevelt Dime: Potentially valuable due to a lower mintage and the historic significance of the pandemic year, these dimes have sold for as much as $338, though $15 is more common.
- 1800 Draped Bust Dime: This extremely rare dime, featuring Lady Liberty with a ribbon in her hair, could be a major find. With an estimated 200 in existence, one sold for $192,000 in 2022.
- 1941-1942-D Overdate Mercury Dime: A wartime minting error resulted in some dimes bearing both dates. These are worth hundreds, with mint condition examples selling for thousands.
Before rushing to sell your dimes, research their value based on date, mint mark, and condition. Consulting a coin appraiser can help you determine their true worth. While finding a fortune in your pocket is unlikely, it’s worth checking!
