Sneaky Foods Hiding Summer Weight Loss Sabotage

Additional Coverage:

Summer is here, and so is the desire for that perfect “beach bod.” But beware of misleading food marketing!

Those seemingly healthy snacks might be sabotaging your weight loss goals. We spoke with bariatric surgeon Dr.

Hector Perez and registered dietitian Ro Huntriss to get the lowdown on six deceptively unhealthy foods.

1. Granola: Often touted as a health food, many granola brands are loaded with sugar and unnecessary calories. Huntriss recommends choosing granola with no added sugar and a short ingredient list, or opting for plain oats with fruit and nuts.

2. Veggie Pasta: Don’t be fooled!

While it sounds healthy, veggie pasta often lacks the fiber of real vegetables and acts like a refined carbohydrate. Dr.

Perez warns that it can lead to overeating. Pair a reasonable portion of whole-grain pasta with plenty of fresh vegetables instead.

3. Protein Bars: Some protein bars are glorified candy bars packed with sugar and preservatives.

Huntriss suggests choosing bars with whole food ingredients, minimal sugar, and at least 10 grams of protein. A boiled egg and a piece of fruit offer a healthier protein boost.

4. Premade Smoothies: Those colorful bottled smoothies might look tempting, but they often hide added sugars, juice concentrates, and oversized portions. Huntriss recommends making your own smoothies at home with frozen fruit, vegetables, and protein sources.

5. Veggie Chips: These often contain more unhealthy ingredients than actual vegetables. Huntriss suggests snacking on raw vegetables with hummus, roasted chickpeas, or air-popped popcorn for a healthier crunch.

6. Dried Fruit: While fruit is generally healthy, many dried fruit varieties are coated in sugar.

Dr. Perez points out that a small handful of dried mango can contain a whopping 30 grams of sugar without being filling.

Opt for fresh, seasonal fruit for a more nutritious and satisfying snack.
