Norton, Kansas Meteorite Fragment Appraised at $7,000 on Antiques Roadshow
A geologist appearing on Antiques Roadshow had a piece of his family history appraised – a fragment of a meteorite that fell on his relatives’ farm in Norton County, Kansas, in 1948. The geologist explained the fragment, a stony meteorite, helped spark his interest in the field.
An expert on the show was impressed by the size of the piece, noting its potential value could exceed that of the original 2,300 lb meteorite, which sold for $3,600. The expert estimated the fragment’s auction value conservatively between $5,000 and $7,000, but acknowledged it could be worth significantly more with further analysis.
The guest recounted childhood memories of sneaking into his grandparents’ closet to marvel at the space rock, which they kept in a small box.
Rare Stony Iron Meteorite Valued at $20,000 on Antiques Roadshow
In a separate episode, a woman brought in her late husband’s prized meteorite, a rare stony iron specimen. The expert explained that stony iron meteorites represent less than 1% of all meteorites found on Earth.
The presence of crystals further enhanced its value. Identifying its origin as Glorietta, New Mexico, the expert linked it to the famed Glorietta Mountain Fall.
Ultimately, the meteorite was appraised at $20,000 for insurance purposes.
