Chicago’s Memorial Day weekend marred by violence, two dead among 22 shooting victims
Chicago— A wave of gun violence swept across Chicago over Memorial Day weekend, leaving two dead and 20 others injured. According to reports, 22 people were shot in various incidents across the city.
On Saturday afternoon, a 35-year-old man was fatally shot inside a vehicle in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. An argument reportedly erupted inside the vehicle, and as the victim attempted to exit, he was shot by another occupant. The shooter fled the scene and remains at large.
Later that same afternoon, also on the Northwest Side, a 46-year-old man was shot in the head while inside his vehicle near Humboldt Park. His vehicle then crashed into another car and a pole.
He was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. The suspect in this shooting is also still at large.
Two additional individuals were shot near a Humboldt Park homeless encampment, one critically injured. The shooter in this incident remains unidentified.
On the city’s South Side, two people were shot while sitting inside their home. The suspect fled and has not been apprehended.
These incidents contribute to a grim statistic. According to data tracked by the Chicago Tribune, 139 homicides have been recorded in Chicago so far this year (through May 17th). This follows a year in which 573 people were killed in the city in 2024.
Last week, two Venezuelan nationals residing illegally in Chicago were arrested by ICE in connection with a December mass shooting that left three dead and five injured. The two suspects, alleged members of the Tren de Aragua street gang, were among over a dozen individuals arrested as part of the investigation.
