Retail Giant Walmart Fined for Shipping Illegal Toy Guns in New York

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that Walmart has been fined for shipping realistic-looking toy guns to New York consumers. An investigation revealed that the retail giant shipped at least 46 illegal imitation firearms between March 2020 and November 2023 via its website.

The toys violated New York law, which prohibits the sale and shipment of toy guns resembling real firearms in colors like black, dark blue, silver, or aluminum. Toy guns sold in the state must be brightly colored or made of transparent materials.

Walmart has agreed to a settlement, paying $16,000 in penalties and fees. The company will also implement measures to prevent third-party sellers from selling these illegal toy guns to New York addresses.

“Realistic-looking toy guns can put communities in serious danger,” Attorney General James stated, emphasizing the importance of the ban in protecting New Yorkers. This law stems from the tragic 2014 shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was killed by police while carrying a pellet gun.

Following that incident, retailers like Walmart and Amazon committed to refraining from selling realistic toy guns in New York.
