Forget Amalfi: Italy Has Hidden Gems

Forget the Amalfi Coast: 3 Southern Italy Spots You’ll Love Even More

The Amalfi Coast. Picturesque cliffs, charming villages…and hordes of tourists.

Been there, done that (three times!), and frankly, I’m over it. Southern Italy has so much more to offer, and I’ve found a few hidden gems that blow the Amalfi Coast out of the water.

So, ditch the crowds and the inflated prices, and check out these alternatives:

Cefalù, Sicily: My Sicilian Sanctuary

Sicily stole my heart years ago, and Cefalù, a charming city on its northern coast, is my absolute favorite spot. From the narrow streets winding up to the magnificent cathedral perched on a cliff, to the long sandy beach perfect for soaking up the sun, Cefalù offers a little slice of paradise.

And the food? Forget about it!

Arancini, granita…pure heaven. Plus, getting there is a breeze compared to the Amalfi Coast traffic nightmare – hop on a train from Palermo, and you’re there in an hour.

Aeolian Islands, Sicily: Volcanic Views and Island Vibes

Just off Sicily’s northern coast, the Aeolian Islands offer a volcanic archipelago adventure. Seven unique islands, each with its own distinct personality, await.

Take a dip in Vulcano’s mud baths, admire Panarea’s vibrant blue and white architecture, or witness Stromboli’s fiery eruptions from a boat. Trust me, a boat tour is the way to go.

It’s a far cry from the crowded Amalfi Coast, and the experience is unforgettable.

Matera, Basilicata: A Step Back in Time

Forget the coast altogether! Matera, nestled in Basilicata’s stunning Gravina Canyon, is a journey into ancient history.

This city, one of the oldest continuously inhabited in the world, boasts dwellings and churches carved directly into the cliffs. It’s a sight unlike anything else in Italy.

While Matera is gaining popularity, it’s nowhere near as crowded as the Amalfi Coast. Explore the medieval historic center, dine in romantic cave restaurants, and soak in the unique atmosphere.

Getting there is an adventure in itself, but the journey is well worth the reward.
