Mableton, GA—Michael Sumler, longtime wardrobe valet and on-stage presence for Kool & the Gang, tragically died in a car accident late Sunday night. Cobb County police confirmed that Sumler was involved in a head-on collision on Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton around 11:35 pm on May 25th.

The other driver involved was unharmed. Sumler was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Kool & the Gang released a statement expressing their deep sadness at Sumler’s passing. They remembered him not only for his work ensuring the band “looked their best on stage” between 2004 and 2015, but also for his infectious energy and dance moves that enthused crowds.

More recently, Sumler assisted the band with events for their LeKool champagne brand. The band offered condolences and stated they would miss him.

Mableton Mayor Michael Owens also paid tribute to Sumler, referring to him as “Chicago Mike” and highlighting his contributions to the music and entertainment communities. Owens noted Sumler’s unique style and energy that added “flair and excitement” to Kool & the Gang’s performances for decades.

Sumler recounted his journey to joining Kool & the Gang during a 2018 interview. He explained that a chance encounter with a Kool & the Gang security guard, who witnessed Sumler performing with his Chicago-based group Power Pac, led to an invitation to meet the band. He initially worked as a stylist and choreographer before his on-stage charisma earned him a permanent spot in their performances.

Kool & the Gang are two-time Grammy winners, Hollywood Walk of Fame recipients, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
