Ed Gale, the actor who brought the killer doll Chucky to life in the Child’s Play franchise, has passed away at 61. His niece, Kayse Gale, shared the news on Facebook with a touching—and witty—tribute, acknowledging the irony of a “surprisingly light coffin” for the horror icon’s final bow.
Gale’s journey to Hollywood was a classic tale of ambition and dreams. At just 20, he left his hometown of Plainwell, Michigan, with $41 in his pocket and a head full of aspirations.
He landed the role of Chucky in 1988’s Child’s Play and reprised it in the 1990 sequel. But his career spanned far beyond the horror genre.
He boasted over 130 film, television, and commercial credits, including roles in cult classics like Howard the Duck, Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town, and even Spaceballs. He also voiced characters and took on roles requiring unique physicality, like the baby dinosaur Tasha in Land of the Lost.
While he loved regaling fans with stories from his Hollywood adventures, Kayse revealed that Gale’s most cherished role was that of “fun uncle,” sharing his passion for the entertainment industry with his nieces. She fondly remembered his love of hot dogs, his days as a DJ at the local roller rink, and his infectious laugh. Funeral arrangements are pending.
