Stunned “Antiques Roadshow” Guest Learns Family Heirloom Is Worth a Fortune
An “Antiques Roadshow” guest received a delightful shock when she learned the true value of her grandmother’s diamond and pearl necklace. Having inherited the piece in 1988, the guest recalled a previous appraisal of $10,000. Little did she know, its value had skyrocketed.
The guest, who had only worn the necklace at her own and her sister’s weddings, watched in disbelief as the appraiser revealed a conservative valuation of $250,000. The expert explained that the volatile diamond market contributed to the dramatic increase, hinting that the necklace could be worth even more in the future.
“Oh boy. Thank you very much.
That’s amazing,” the stunned guest responded.
Several factors contributed to the impressive appraisal. The necklace, featuring two large diamonds (one five-carat and one two-carat), smaller surrounding diamonds, and pearls, was set in platinum. Furthermore, the original box remained in excellent condition, adding to the necklace’s overall value.
This wasn’t the only jewelry surprise on the show. In another episode, a guest presented a pair of diamond bracelets from the early 1900s, which could be combined to form a 23-carat choker necklace.
Purchased by her father for $20,000 in the 1970s, the bracelets, originally belonging to the guest’s great-great-great aunt, featured distinctive yellow-tinted diamonds mined in South Africa. While the expert noted the unsigned nature of both the piece and its box detracted slightly from its value, they estimated it could fetch between $60,000 and $90,000 at auction.
These stories highlight the potential treasures hiding in plain sight, waiting to be discovered on “Antiques Roadshow.”
