Eleven-time Grammy winner Joni Mitchell, 81, made a rare public appearance in Beverly Hills over the weekend, signing autographs for fans. The legendary singer-songwriter’s health has been a concern over the past decade, following a near-fatal brain aneurysm in 2015 and her ongoing struggle with Morgellons disease.
While Mitchell has continued to perform, she often does so seated or in a wheelchair, as seen at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala in February. There, she performed “Both Sides Now” and “Summertime.”
Mitchell has been open about her health challenges, referencing her childhood polio diagnosis during her 2021 Kennedy Center Honors acceptance speech. She stated that polio was “a rehearsal for the rest of [her] life,” adding, “I’ve had to come back several times from things.
And this last one was a real whopper. But, you know, I’m hobbling along, but I’m doing all right!”
Over her illustrious career, Mitchell has garnered numerous Grammy Awards, including Best Folk Performance, Best Pop Album, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and Album of the Year. She also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Her iconic hits include “Big Yellow Taxi,” “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio,” “Help Me,” “Free Man in Paris,” and “Both Sides Now.”
