Rihanna’s New Smurfs Song: A Stunner Visually, But Vocally Underwhelming

The new Smurfs movie, simply titled Smurfs, hits theaters July 18th, and Rihanna has released “Friend of Mine” as a musical teaser. While the video showcases Rihanna looking absolutely fabulous strolling through a life-sized Smurf village in a stylish leather trench coat, the song itself hasn’t quite hit the mark with fans.

Many have expressed disappointment, pointing out the minimal lyrics and heavy reliance on the repeated line, “You feel like a friend of mine.” The extensive use of autotune has also drawn criticism, deemed “unnecessary” by numerous commenters on the official YouTube video. Expectations were high, and it seems Rihanna may have fallen short this time.

Social media has been abuzz with fan reactions, ranging from disappointment to outright dismay. Some fans felt the song was far too short, with one commenting, “She literally saying the equivalent words of 5 seconds and told the producers to stretch it out into a 3 minute song.

This is horrible.” Others joked about the repetitive lyrics and heavy autotune, with one saying, “If you told me this was a fan made AI song, I’d believe it.”

While some fans expressed acceptance, the overall sentiment suggests a desire for more from the pop icon.
