A climber who fell thousands of feet on Denali has been found dead. The National Park Service confirmed that the body of 41-year-old Alex Chiu was recovered Wednesday morning.

Chiu was climbing the popular West Buttress route with two companions on Monday when he fell approximately 3,000 feet from an area known as Squirrel Point. His climbing partners attempted to reach him, but were unable to see or hear him after the fall. They descended to seek help.

Severe weather, including high winds and snow, hampered rescue efforts until Wednesday.

This section of the West Buttress route has seen multiple climbing fatalities since 1980, according to the NPS. Currently, 500 climbers are on Denali, as the peak of climbing season runs from early May to early July.
