Legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel, 76, recently shared a health update with fans, offering a touch of his signature humor amidst a challenging time. At the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his new documentary, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” directors Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin relayed a message from the musician: “Getting old sucks, but it’s still preferable to getting cremated.”
Joel had previously announced the cancellation of his remaining tour dates due to a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition. NPH involves the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, which can affect balance, vision, and hearing. These symptoms were exacerbated by recent performances, prompting doctors to advise Joel to undergo physical therapy and refrain from performing.
This recent cancellation follows a postponement earlier this year due to an unspecified medical condition and subsequent surgery. At that time, Joel expressed his regret but emphasized that his health had to take priority. He assured fans he looked forward to returning to the stage.
Now, with the premiere of his documentary, which features rare performance footage and intimate glimpses into his personal life, fans have received a reassuring, albeit wry, update. While the road to recovery may be challenging, Joel’s message suggests his spirit remains undimmed.
The documentary is set to air later this summer. Lacy also added that Joel is determined to make a comeback, promising fans, “He will be back.”
