Social Security Benefits Available for Eligible Family Members After a Death

The death of a loved one is a difficult time, and dealing with financial matters can add to the stress. However, if the deceased had a sufficient work history covered by Social Security, eligible family members may be entitled to benefits. It’s important to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) as soon as possible to learn about potential benefits and ensure a smooth application process.

What benefits are available?

  • One-time death benefit: A one-time payment of $255 is available to help with funeral expenses. This payment is generally made to a surviving spouse living with the deceased.

If the spouse was living separately but receiving certain Social Security benefits on the deceased’s record, they may still be eligible. If there is no eligible spouse, the payment can be made to a child who was receiving benefits on the deceased’s record.

  • Monthly survivor benefits: Depending on their relationship to the deceased and other factors, certain family members may be eligible for monthly benefits. These can include:
  • Surviving spouses age 60 or older (or age 50 or older if disabled)

Spouses of any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16

* Disabled spouses receiving Social Security benefits
 * Unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students in elementary or secondary school)

* Adult children disabled before age 22
 * Stepchildren, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, or adopted children under certain circumstances

* Parents age 62 or older who relied on the deceased for at least half of their support
 * Surviving divorced spouses under certain circumstances

How to apply for benefits:

  1. Notify the SSA: Funeral directors often report deaths to the SSA, but it’s recommended to contact the SSA directly to initiate the benefits application process. Providing the deceased’s Social Security number will be necessary.
  1. Contact the SSA: You can reach the SSA online, by mail, by phone at 1-800-772-1213 (or 1-800-325-0778 for the deaf or hard of hearing), or in person by appointment. Interpreter services are available.

Important information about benefit payments:

  • Returning benefits: If the deceased received Social Security benefits for the month of their death, those funds may need to be returned. If the payment was by direct deposit, contact the bank to return the funds.

If paid by check, do not cash it; return it to the SSA. While coroners report deaths to the SSA, families are still responsible for returning any benefits received after the date of death to avoid potential repayment issues later.
