Kelso Teen’s Mall Attack Plot Thwarted by FBI
A potential mass casualty event was averted in Kelso, Washington, thanks to the swift action of the FBI. A juvenile male, whose name has not been released, was arrested on May 22nd in connection with a planned attack at the Three Rivers Crossing shopping mall.
Authorities revealed the teen had meticulously plotted the assault, which included detonating a chlorine bomb at the Regal Cinemas and then shooting fleeing moviegoers before taking his own life. A hand-drawn map of the mall, along with detailed written plans, were discovered at the suspect’s residence.
The FBI was alerted to the plot on May 19th after receiving a tip about concerning posts on an online chat forum. Within 24 hours, agents had identified the suspect, obtained a search warrant, and taken him into custody. Along with the plans, agents found the weapons intended for the attack and the clothing the teen planned to wear.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Douglas Olson described the plot as “as serious as it gets” and noted that the teen had expressed allegiance to online extremist groups and had been planning the attack since early 2024. The arrest underscores the vital role of online vigilance and rapid response in preventing acts of violence.
