American Coco Gauff fought her way to victory at the French Open, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 to claim her first French Open title.
The thrilling match included a strategically timed bathroom break by Gauff. Commentator Naomi Broady noted Gauff’s heartwarming reunion with her family immediately after the win, saying, “It is the reaction of her mum and dad as she makes her way up to the box.
They are the first people she sees. Her mum was ready and waiting, her dad sprinted down the stairs.”
Overcome with emotion, Gauff thanked her parents, saying, “You guys keep me grounded and give me the belief. Thanks, and I love you guys.” She also extended her gratitude to her brothers, adding, “To my brothers at home, you are the reason I do this, and you inspire me more than you know.”
Gauff’s road to the championship had its ups and downs. After a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, she experienced early exits in both Doha and Dubai. However, strong performances in subsequent tournaments, including Indian Wells, saw her reclaim the top spot among American players.
Addressing the crowd, a grateful Gauff exclaimed, “Thanks to everyone who made this tournament happen, and thanks to you guys! You really helped me today, you were cheering for me so hard.” She expressed her appreciation for the French crowd’s support, adding a “merci beaucoup” to her thanks.
Gauff admitted to self-doubt going into the match, quoting rapper Tyler the Creator: “If I ever told you I had a doubt inside me, I must be lying.” She gave credit to both Tyler and the fans for her victory.
This win is particularly sweet for Gauff, who reached the French Open final in 2022 but lost to Iga Swiatek.
In a display of sportsmanship, Sabalenka praised Gauff, saying, “Coco, congrats. In these tough conditions, you were a better player than me.
Well done on a great two weeks, congrats on the second Grand Slam, well deserved. You are a fighter, congrats to you and your team.”
She also thanked the crowd for their enthusiastic support.
