Felton Faces Fan Backlash Over Rowling Comments
Actor Tom Felton, known for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, recently drew criticism from fans following comments he made about J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues.
At the Tony Awards on June 8, Felton was asked by a reporter if the online controversy surrounding Rowling’s statements had impacted him. Felton stated that he was “not really that attuned to it,” emphasizing his gratitude to Rowling for bringing people together through the Harry Potter franchise.
This response sparked immediate backlash on social media, with many fans expressing disappointment and anger. Some accused Felton of being privileged and out of touch, while others criticized him for seemingly prioritizing the positive impact of the Harry Potter series over the harm caused by Rowling’s words. Several fans pointed out that Rowling’s statements have made the world less safe for transgender individuals.
Felton’s comments stand in contrast to those of several other Harry Potter actors, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who have publicly condemned Rowling’s views and expressed support for the transgender community. Numerous other cast members have also spoken out against Rowling or signed open letters in support of transgender rights.
Rowling has faced accusations of transphobia since 2018, stemming from social media activity and public statements. She has continued to express views considered by many to be transphobic, most recently making unsubstantiated claims about the gender identity of an Algerian boxer.
