Driverless Cars Torched in LA Riots

Additional Coverage:

Downtown Los Angeles has become a no-go zone for Waymo’s self-driving cars. The company, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, pulled its autonomous vehicles from the area after several were set ablaze during protests against ICE immigration raids. Waymo stated it was taking the precaution while staying in contact with law enforcement, and will continue operations in other parts of the city.

The riots, sparked by the ICE raids, have escalated over the weekend. Protesters are demanding an end to deportations, while President Trump has deployed National Guard troops to the city. This move has been met with resistance from local leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom, who has publicly requested the troops be returned to his command.

Violence and vandalism have spread throughout downtown Los Angeles. Along with the burned Waymo vehicles, the LAPD reported widespread graffiti, looting, and property damage.

Mayor Karen Bass expressed her dismay at the destruction. Police are actively working to disperse crowds and respond to reports of criminal activity.
