New Orleans Correctional Center Escape: Former Employee Arrested
A former employee of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for her alleged role in the escape of an inmate from the New Orleans Correctional Center last month. Darriana Burton was taken into custody in New Orleans on Monday and is facing a felony charge of conspiracy to commit simple escape.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that Burton is believed to be the girlfriend of escapee Derrick Groves, with whom she has had an on-again, off-again relationship for three years. Burton was employed by the Sheriff’s Office from August 2022 to March 2023.
The Louisiana Bureau of Investigation uncovered evidence suggesting Burton “knowingly and willfully” assisted in planning the escape. Investigators discovered text messages and video calls between Burton and Groves in the days leading up to the escape, which occurred on May 16.
The communications, conducted via a facility-issued iPad system, were intentionally vague, hinting at further discussions on unmonitored lines. The arrest warrant affidavit alleges that Burton’s actions demonstrate “intentional and active involvement in the planning phase of the escape.”
Eight of the ten escapees have been apprehended. Groves, convicted of a double homicide last October, and Antoine Massey, who has a history of escaping custody, remain at large.
Authorities consider both men armed and dangerous. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to their capture.
Law enforcement continues to urge public vigilance and follow up on tips. Last week, authorities searched a home where Massey may have recorded a video pleading his innocence.
Attorney General Murrill issued a stern warning: “We will continue to pursue anyone and everyone who has aided and abetted these criminals. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the full extent of the law.”
