- Young ‘Antiques Roadshow’ guest says ‘thank you, dad’ after hearing the value of her video games (marketrealist.com)
A young “Antiques Roadshow” guest got a pleasant surprise after bringing a pair of vintage video games to the show. The games, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Double Dragon, were gifts from her father, who received them when he was younger but never opened them because he already owned copies.
The young guest estimated their value at around $100. Appraiser Travis Landry noted the games were second prints – first prints being significantly more valuable – but were still worth a considerable sum due to their unopened, original packaging.
He explained that while the retro video game market was once uncertain, it has since taken off. The guest was stunned to learn the two games were appraised at $3,000-$5,000.
Mr. Landry added that a first edition of Super Mario Bros. 3 could be worth as much as $150,000.
While children rarely appear on “Antiques Roadshow,” this isn’t the first time a young collector has appeared on the program. In another episode, a young man brought in a painting by Dutch artist Albert Neuhuys, which he purchased for a few dollars.
The boy, who described himself as a collector of glass, sterling silver, and art, impressed appraiser David Weiss with his knowledge of silver prices. He estimated the painting’s worth at $150, but Mr.
Weiss appraised it at $1,000-$1,500, much to the young man’s delight.
