Fired Newsman Stands by Controversial Words

Former ABC News anchor Terry Moran stands by controversial social media post that led to his dismissal.

In a recent interview, Moran, 65, confirmed he has “no regrets” about his comments on X (formerly Twitter) criticizing the Trump administration, and specifically, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. The post, which led to Moran’s termination from ABC News, called Miller a “world-class hater” and described his hatred as his “spiritual nourishment.”

Some speculated Moran was intoxicated when he wrote the post, but he insists that wasn’t the case. He described the evening as a “normal family night” involving a walk with his dog, dinner with his family, and watching the movie “Ocean’s Eleven.”

He stated he was simply reflecting on current events when he composed the now-deleted tweet.

Moran’s post, published on June 8th, stated, “The thing about Stephen Miller is not that he is the brains behind Trumpism…It’s bile…Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred…He eats his hate.” He also called former President Trump a “world-class hater,” but said Trump’s hatred served his own self-aggrandizement.

Following the post, former Vice President Mike Pence’s running mate, JD Vance, demanded an apology from ABC, calling the post an “absolutely vile smear.” ABC News subsequently fired Moran, issuing a statement citing his violation of company policies and emphasizing their commitment to “objectivity, fairness, and professionalism.”

Moran, who has never met Miller, defends his right to speak his mind. “I don’t think you should ever regret telling the truth,” he told the New York Times. Before his departure, Moran held several prominent positions at ABC News, including Chief Foreign Correspondent, co-anchor of Nightline, and Chief White House Correspondent.
