Two court officers were stabbed at the Manhattan criminal courthouse Monday morning during a security screening. According to a state courts spokesperson, one officer was slashed in the face, and the other in the neck. Both officers were transported to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect was quickly subdued by other court officers near the metal detectors, disarmed, and taken into custody. Officials describe the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual with 18 prior arrests, largely drug-related, and a history of concerning behavior at the courthouse. He is currently undergoing evaluation at Bellevue Hospital.
State courts spokesperson Al Baker characterized the incident as an apparent “targeted attack.” Video footage of the attack, obtained by news outlets, appears to show the suspect attempting to pass through security before lunging at the officers. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
