Children of Slain Minnesota Representative Speak Out, Urge Community to Choose Love
The children of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman, who was tragically killed along with her husband Mark earlier this week, have released a heartfelt statement. Sophie and Colin Hortman expressed their devastation, describing their parents as “the bright lights” of their lives. They thanked law enforcement for their swift actions in apprehending the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, and for the officers’ attempts to save their parents.
Boelter, who allegedly posed as a police officer, is also accused of wounding State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Authorities believe the attacks were politically motivated, citing a list of elected officials found in Boelter’s vehicle.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Hortman children urged the community to come together, offering simple yet profound suggestions to honor their parents’ memory: visit a local park, pet a dog, tell a “cheesy dad joke,” and “stand up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace.”
The family also shared the heartbreaking news that their dog, Gilbert, who was injured in the shooting, had to be euthanized.
The Hoffman family also released a statement, expressing gratitude for the support they’ve received and acknowledging their fortunate survival. They are currently focused on their recovery.
Representative Hortman, a prominent figure in Minnesota politics, was known for her love of the outdoors and her advocacy work. The loss of the Hortmans is a deep blow to the community and the state.
