- ‘Jeopardy’ fans are unhappy about a ‘misleading’ clue that stumped all three contestants (marketrealist.com)
“Jeopardy!” viewers cried foul over a recent Final Jeopardy clue that left all three contestants stumped.
The clue, under the category “U.S. Business,” read: “The ‘stencil’ logo released in 1979 for this chain used only 2 colors, one of which emphasized ‘energy’ and ‘value.’”
Contestants Jam Zimmerman, Rob Forrester, and returning champion Matt Massie all failed to come up with the correct response: Home Depot.
Zimmerman guessed Staples, while both Forrester and Massie incorrectly answered Kmart. The reveal of the correct answer sparked debate online, with many viewers taking to social media to express their confusion and frustration.
Some argued the clue was too obscure, while others felt it was misleading, focusing on the stencil-like appearance of the logo rather than more recognizable brand elements. One commenter pointed out that the clue referred to the lettering of “THE HOME DEPOT” appearing as if stenciled, rather than the logo itself featuring a stencil.
Despite the Final Jeopardy stumble, Massie ultimately triumphed, securing his position as returning champion. Earlier in the game, he successfully navigated several challenging clues, including identifying Argentina and Uruguay as the two South American nations whose capitals sit on opposite shores of the Rio de la Plata estuary, and correctly answering “Betting and Bidding” to the clue “Another word for sheets & such becomes what you ‘do,’ such as a king’s desire.”
Though he missed a $2,400 clue about the Montblanc pen company, his overall performance proved strong enough to carry him to victory. Forrester and Zimmerman finished with $1,000 and $800, respectively.
