Childhood Hobby Turns into Comic Book Goldmine on Antiques Roadshow

A pair of brothers were stunned to discover their decades-long comic book collection is worth a small fortune. The siblings, who appeared on a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow, brought along their trove of Marvel Silver Age comics, amassed over 45 years. Appraiser Travis Landry estimated the collection’s value at a staggering $60,000 to $90,000.

The brothers recounted how their hobby began innocently enough. One brother, then in the Air Force, gifted his younger teenage brother a box of comics for Christmas.

The following year, another box followed, and the two began collecting in earnest, attempting to complete their sets. They admitted they likely never spent more than $100 on any single comic book.

Landry highlighted key issues within the collection, including Fantastic Four #1, a cornerstone of the Silver Age of Marvel comics. He also pointed out Amazing Fantasy #15, featuring the first appearance of Spider-Man.

While acknowledging the comics weren’t in pristine condition, Landry explained that their rarity significantly boosted their value. He estimated Amazing Fantasy #15 alone could fetch $10,000 to $15,000 at auction.

Other notable comics, such as Incredible Hulk #1 and X-Men #1, also garnered impressive appraisals.

Despite the eye-popping valuation, the brothers insist they have no intention of selling. They explained they collected for the pure enjoyment of it, and plan to pass the collection down to the next generation. While some of the less valuable comics are displayed in their home, the most prized possessions are securely locked away in a safe.
