Brunswick, GA—A local toddler, Beckham Reed, is fighting for his life after being stung over 150 times by yellowjacket wasps. The incident occurred while Beckham was playing outside his home. Born with only one kidney, the toddler’s small body is struggling to cope with the sheer volume of toxins from the stings.
After an initial visit to the emergency room, Beckham was sent home. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was readmitted to Southeast Georgia Health System before being transferred to the ICU at Memorial Savannah. He is currently on dialysis and a ventilator, receiving critical care and IV medications to support his organs and cleanse his system.
A GoFundMe page organized by Tiffany Hewatt is raising money to support the family as Beckham’s father, Peyton, remains by his side. The fundraiser highlights the uncommon nature of Beckham’s medical crisis and the lack of an antivenom for yellowjacket stings, leaving doctors to provide supportive care while the toxins gradually leave his system. The campaign has already raised over $22,000.
Updates on Beckham’s condition indicate a slow but hopeful recovery. While there have been concerns about fluctuating electrolytes, platelet levels, and possible infection, recent reports suggest his vital signs are improving.
The medical team is closely monitoring his kidney and liver function, and hopes to remove his breathing tube soon. The family, including Beckham’s mother, Mariah, who is expecting their second child in August, asks for continued prayers and patience during this challenging time.
