A collector’s macabre treasures turned out to be worth a pretty penny on a recent episode of “Antiques Roadshow.” The guest, a longtime admirer of the darkly whimsical author and illustrator Edward Gorey, brought in a selection of her Gorey collection, including books, dolls, and other curiosities. She estimated her total investment to be under $1,000.
Expert Ken Sanders was clearly impressed with the collection, highlighting its breadth and showcasing Gorey’s uniquely “macabre” mind. Two dolls, Figbash and Bah-humbug (the latter accompanied by a rare signed, limited edition book), were singled out as particularly valuable pieces.
Sanders pointed out Gorey’s distinctive signature – always crossed out and then re-signed below – present on many of the items. Other highlights included a signed “Amphigorey” play poster, a pop-up book, an early edition of one of Gorey’s books, and even a set of tarot cards featuring Gorey’s artwork.
The guest recounted purchasing the Figbash doll for a mere $20, the tarot cards for $50, and a book, “The Green Beads,” for between $150 and $200. She was stunned when Sanders appraised the Bah-humbug book and dust jacket alone at $1,500.
Her gasp of surprise was audible as Sanders placed the total value of the displayed collection at over $5,000. The delighted collector admitted to having even more Gorey items at home, hinting that her “macabre” investment might be worth considerably more than she initially thought.
