From Roommates to Lifelong Friends: A Banff Fairytale
My partner, Sam, and I were in our 20s, eager to experience a working holiday in Banff. Our initial housing situation, a shared house with two other couples, was a whirlwind of parties and, let’s just say, lax cleaning habits. That’s when fate, in the form of a charismatic Canadian named Billy Banff, intervened.
Sam, working for the town, quickly befriended Billy, whose larger-than-life personality made him a local legend. One day, Billy mentioned a spare room in his and his wife Fern’s cozy two-bedroom home. We jumped at the chance.
Moving in, we met Fern, whose warm and grounded nature perfectly balanced Billy’s exuberance. Their home was a haven of open doors and full hearts – literally.
They couldn’t find their house keys because they never locked up! A bottle of Australian merlot awaited us in our room, a thoughtful nod to our homeland.
Despite the age gap – they were in their 50s, we were in our 20s – we clicked. Fern and Billy were young at heart, sharing our love for fun while also offering a caring, nurturing environment.
We cooked together, cleaned together, and shared countless conversations and laughs. I cherished evenings spent chatting with Fern on the veranda after my waitressing shifts, and our impromptu living room dance parties to Maroon 5.
“A Horse With No Name” became our anthem, a soundtrack to that special time.
Leaving Banff was bittersweet. A final farewell feast around a crackling fire cemented the bond we’d forged.
Though we moved on – first to London, then back to Australia – our connection with Fern and Billy remained. Serendipitously, their daughter lived near my family, allowing us to stay in touch and even revisit our beloved Banff with our children.
Earlier this year, a chance encounter in a beachside park brought a familiar melody and a thick Canadian accent to my ears. There was Billy, belting out “A Horse With No Name,” arms wide open for a hug. It reaffirmed what we already knew: Fern and Billy are more than friends; they’re family, a heartwarming reminder of our Banff adventure.
