Local man stunned by $50,000 appraisal of family heirloom on Antiques Roadshow
A local resident received a shocking appraisal for a family heirloom on a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow. The guest, whose name has not been released, brought in a carved wooden sculpture of dogs, a piece he admitted had been with his family for generations, but whose origins remained a mystery.
Appraiser Matthew Quinn initially mistook the sculpture for bronze. Upon closer inspection, however, he recognized it as a piece of Black Forest carving, likely originating from Germany or Switzerland in the late 19th or early 20th century.
Quinn described the carving as “the best piece of Black Forest carving the show has ever seen,” praising its quality and unique character. He even suggested it could be attributed to the renowned carver Walter Mader.
Despite some minor repairs, including a reattached leg, the piece held significant value. Quinn gave a conservative auction estimate of $20,000 to $25,000, leaving the guest speechless.
The surprise continued when Quinn placed the insurance value at a staggering $50,000, citing the rarity and craftsmanship of the piece. The guest, clearly overwhelmed, expressed his astonishment and gratitude for the appraisal.
Quinn, in turn, expressed his own privilege at having the opportunity to examine such a remarkable piece of art.
