Central Texas Remains Under Flash Flood Warning After Devastating Floods
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a “life-threatening” flash flood warning for parts of Central Texas following deadly floods that have tragically taken over 20 lives. Western Burnet County residents face an imminent threat, with rainfall predicted at 3 to 7 inches within a single hour. Similar warnings, also predicting intense rainfall, remain in effect for Burnet, Travis, and Williamson counties.
The NWS warns that “flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly,” with an additional 2 to 5 inches of rain possible. Emphasizing the danger, they remind the public that “most flood deaths occur in vehicles” and urge residents to be vigilant, especially at night. With flooding “occurring or imminent” in western Burnet County, the NWS stresses the importance of avoiding streams, rivers, and creeks, which can quickly become deadly during heavy rain.
Marble Falls, Granite Shoals, and Horseshoe Bay residents along the Colorado River have been instructed to seek higher ground immediately and avoid floodwaters. Warnings extend to those living along the Guadalupe, Llano, Medina, Sandy Creek, Colorado, Concho, and San Saba Rivers, cautioning them about heavy rainfall throughout the weekend.
These warnings come after devastating flash floods in Texas Hill Country on Friday claimed approximately 24 lives and left over 20 campers missing. First responders continue their search efforts despite persistent heavy rain.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration to provide local officials with necessary resources, vowing that “Texas will stop at nothing to ensure every missing person is fully accounted for.” Even former President Donald Trump, en route to his New Jersey golf club, commented on the tragedy, calling it “terrible” and “shocking.”
