Tragedy in Southern Pakistan as Building Collapse Death Toll Rises to 16

The death toll from a collapsed residential building in southern Pakistan has climbed to 16, as rescue workers continue their desperate search for survivors. The multistory building crumbled on Friday, initially claiming six lives. Overnight, rescuers pulled another 10 bodies from the wreckage, according to officials.

The government-run Civil Hospital confirmed it received the 16 bodies and is treating several injured individuals. At least eight more people are feared trapped beneath the debris, and rescue crews are utilizing heavy machinery to sift through the rubble.

However, the building’s location on a narrow street is hindering efforts to bring in additional equipment, according to residents. Heartbreaking scenes from the site show distraught relatives praying for the safety of their loved ones as rescuers work tirelessly.

Unfortunately, building collapses are a recurring tragedy in Pakistan, often attributed to lax enforcement of building codes and the use of subpar materials. Cost-cutting measures frequently lead to the disregard of critical safety regulations, putting lives at risk. A similar incident occurred in June 2020 in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province, where an apartment building collapse claimed 22 lives.
